Mexican Red-Knee Tarantulas
Two Species of Mexican Red-Knee Tarantulas
There are two species of Mexican red-knee tarantulas, both native to Mexico's Pacific coast. These two species are known as the Brachypelma hamorii and the Brachypelma smithi.
Brachypelma hamorii
The Brachypelma hamorii is the most popular pet tarantula species due to its docile nature and relatively small size. It has a dark brown to black body with reddish-orange hairs on its legs and abdomen. The Brachypelma hamorii is found in the states of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacan, and Guerrero in Mexico.
Brachypelma smithi
The Brachypelma smithi is less common in the pet trade but is still a popular choice for experienced tarantula keepers. It is larger than the Brachypelma hamorii and has a more aggressive temperament. The Brachypelma smithi is found in the states of Nayarit, Jalisco, and Colima in Mexico.
